Solo cruising is an amazing way to travel β thereβs complete freedom to do as much or as little as you like, explore destinations at your own pace, and enjoy the ship in your own way. Iβve paid for each of these cruises myself, choosing to share my experiences to help you decide on your next holiday. Here are five ships Iβve sailed solo on and what made each of them stand out.
1. P&O Iona
I treated myself to Ionaβs maiden voyage, and it was a fantastic experience. This ship is perfect for solo travellers, especially on Ionaβs popular scenic itineraries like the Norwegian Fjords. With its modern design, plenty of open spaces, and a variety of casual dining options, Iona makes solo cruising so easy. The relaxed atmosphere and entertainment choices mean thereβs always something to enjoy, whether youβre wanting to socialise or just taking in the views and go with the flow!

2. Emerald Princess

I treated myself to a cruise up the East Coast of the US from New York City to Canada and back, and boy was it an unforgettable journey. Emerald Princess is a classic and comfortable ship with a very welcoming atmosphere from both crew and my fellow American passengers. I find American Cruisers are just such a friendly bunch, which really helps on a solo cruise! Princess Cruises is known for its friendly service and elegant yet relaxed onboard experience. As a solo traveller, I found it easy to meet people, and the variety of dining options, entertainment, and enrichment activities meant there was always something to do.
3. Celebrity Beyond

I treated myself to Celebrity Beyondβs maiden voyage and was seriously impressed. The solo infinity balcony staterooms are a fantastic option, offering space, comfort, and stunning views. Solo cruising can often be more expensive, and honestly, Celebrity is one of the priciest cruise lines in the mainstream market. I strongly recommend booking early to secure a solo cabin, as the prices are usually much more reasonable the further in advance you book.
4. Holland America Nieuw Statendam

Perfect for solo travellers who enjoy a more refined and relaxed cruising experience. Nieuw Statendam offers dedicated solo staterooms, an elegant atmosphere, and a strong focus on music and culture, with venues like B.B. Kingβs Blues Club and Lincoln Center Stage. The shipβs extensive enrichment programmes and exceptional dining options, including Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind, make solo travel both enjoyable and enriching.
5. Valiant Lady

Please donβt write off Virgin Voyages as just a party ship. Yes, you can party as little or as much as you desire, but these ships also offer fantastic dining options, wonderful wellness spaces, fabulous entertainment, and gorgeous itineraries. Even if youβre a bit of a party pooper like me, you can still have an amazing cruise! With no set dining times, no formal nights, and plenty of entertainment choices, itβs a ship where you can do things entirely your way, whether that means enjoying a lively atmosphere or just unwinding with a cocktail by the pool.
All of these ships offer plenty of opportunities to meet fellow solo cruisers if you want to, whether through organised events or just striking up conversations around the ship. But if youβre more of an introverted cruise geek after some solo rest and relaxation, nothing is mandatory β you can spend the entire voyage enjoying your own company if you prefer!
Solo cruising is a brilliant way to travel, and these ships have all made the experience enjoyable in their own way. Iβve personally chosen and paid for each of these holidays, and I love sharing my experiences to help you choose yours.
