Stepping aboard the Belmond British Pullman is like stepping back in time to the golden age of travel. This beautifully restored train offers an unforgettable experience of luxury, fine dining, and stunning countryside views. I recently booked a day trip from London to York, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Having planned and paid for the experience myself as a special treat, I can confidently say it was worth every penny. If youβre considering a special day out, here are five reasons to book this journey.
1. Travel in Unparalleled Luxury

From the moment you step onto the British Pullman, youβre immersed in 1920s glamour. Each carriage has been lovingly restored with Art Deco details, polished wood panelling, and plush armchairs. The white-gloved service is impeccable, making you feel like royalty as you glide through the countryside. The journey is as much about the experience onboard as it is about the destination.

2. Indulgent Dining from Start to Finish

This trip is a true culinary adventure. We began with seasonal Bellinis, a nod to the trainβs sister hotel, the iconic Cipriani in Venice. Brunch was an indulgent affair, featuring warm pastries, granola, and smoked salmon royale with caviar, poached egg, toasted English muffin, and hollandaise sauce, accompanied by coffee from HR Higgins or a selection of teas by Newby of London.

The return journey was even more decadent. Greeted with a glass (or two) of Veuve Clicquot, we were treated to a five-course dinner as the sun set over the English countryside. The menu included Cornish hake with Windsor beans, a rich spinach soup, and perfectly cooked Kent lamb with pearled spelt and spring greens. Dessert was a tangy glazed lemon tart followed by a Great British cheeseboard and hand-rolled truffles. Every course was beautifully presented and paired with impeccable service.

3. A Perfect Way to Explore Historic York

York is a city steeped in history, and this trip gives you just enough time to soak in its charm. On arrival, we were met by a knowledgeable guide who took us on a walking tour through the cityβs most famous landmarks. We wandered through the medieval streets of the Shambles, climbed the historic walls, admired the breathtaking York Minster, and strolled along the River Ouse.

With some free time before our return, we had the chance to explore at our own pace. Whether you want to visit the Jorvik Viking Centre, browse independent shops, or stop for tea in one of Yorkβs historic cafΓ©s, thereβs plenty to see and do in just a few hours.
4. A Seamless and Stress-Free Journey

One of the best parts of this trip is that everything is taken care of. Thereβs no need to worry about train schedules, booking restaurants, or planning an itinerary. From the moment you board in London to the time you return in the evening, every detail is handled with effortless precision. The British Pullman offers a relaxed and stress-free way to visit York in style.

5. A Special Occasion to Remember

At Β£505 per person, this trip is certainly a splurge, but itβs worth every penny. I booked the journey six months in advance as a joint birthday celebration for my husband and me, and it was truly unforgettable. Whether youβre celebrating a milestone, treating a loved one, or simply indulging in a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a day on the British Pullman is an incredible way to do it.
The next journey to York is in August, but there are plenty of other destinations to choose from throughout the year. If youβre looking for a luxurious day out, this is one trip that should be on your list!
