If you’re considering a cruise on Crystal Serenity, you may be wondering what really makes the experience different from other luxury ships.

Crystal currently operates two ocean ships, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, with a focus on spacious ships, highly personalised service and fine dining. The brand was relaunched under A&K Travel Group in 2023, and is expanding again with Crystal Grace due in 2028, followed by further new ocean ships in 2031 and 2034.

So what is Crystal Serenity actually like? Does it feel noticeably more luxurious than other cruise ships? How good are the cabins, food and service? And is it worth the splurge?

This feature is based on a three-night Barcelona round-trip sailing, calling at Marseille and Sète. The cruise was booked and paid for independently and experienced solo.

The curiosity about Crystal had started several years earlier, after spotting one of its ships docked alongside in Mumbai.

Three nights aboard Serenity finally provided the opportunity to answer the question.

What is Crystal actually like?

One thing quickly became apparent. Crystal Serenity doesn’t shout about luxury. It quietly gets on with it. First Impressions of Crystal Serenity. The feeling of luxury begins before you even step aboard.

Embarkation in Barcelona was remarkably calm. No crowds, no rushing and none of the busy terminal atmosphere you can sometimes associate with joining a cruise. Crew members and officers were waiting to welcome guests aboard, setting the tone immediately.

Once onboard, you can enjoy a glass of fizz in Marketplace overlooking Barcelona, browse Hermès handbags in the boutiques or wander the open decks before stopping for a tub of Badiani gelato.

Yet the strongest first impression isn’t any of those things. It is how peaceful the ship feels.

Walking around the pool and open decks in the Barcelona sunshine, you could easily wonder where everyone had gone.

Understated, unhurried and unmistakably luxurious.

Why Does Crystal Serenity Feel So Spacious?

One of Crystal Serenity’s greatest luxuries is simply space.

At 68,870 gross tonnes, the ship carries just 740 guests, giving it one of the highest space-to-passenger ratios at sea. Crystal describes its guest-to-space ratio of 93.1 as industry-leading.

You really feel it onboard.

There were times when Serenity felt almost like a private ship. Open decks could be deserted, public spaces rarely felt busy and there was never a sense of competing with hundreds of other passengers for somewhere to sit.

And this isn’t a tiny yacht. At around 250 metres long, there’s a substantial ship to explore.

Having so much ship shared between so few passengers is a luxury in itself.

What Are the Cabins and Suites Like on Crystal Serenity?

Accommodation on Crystal Serenity ranges from 215-square-foot guest rooms to enormous penthouses measuring well over 1,000 square feet.

During the call at Marseille, a suite open house provided the opportunity to visit and photograph several different categories, so you’ll find a closer look at those later in this feature.

For this three-night sailing, the accommodation was Aquamarine Veranda Suite 10038.

Opening the door provides a proper wow moment.

The suite is beautifully spacious, with a large bed and comfortable sofa, plus a separate dressing area with its own mirror, seat and dressing table. On the other side sits a useful desk area.

Storage is generous, with plenty of wardrobe space and hangers. You’ll also find two different styles of robe, a laundry bag, safe and umbrella, plus Bushnell binoculars to use during your cruise.

An in-room tablet puts voyage information, onboard experiences and entertainment details at your fingertips.

Then there are the little touches. Even the luggage mat was decorated with tiny gold compasses, ships and suitcases. It’s completely unnecessary. However completely lovely.

A Spa Bath at Sea, the bathroom has a rather unusual luxury for a cruise ship: a proper jetted spa bath. You will also find a separate standalone shower, giving you the choice of a quick shower or a long soak after a day exploring ashore. Luxury Ortigia toiletries are provided, alongside plenty of storage and counter space. One feature did feel noticeably older: the wall-mounted hairdryer. However, there was also a modern hairdryer in the wardrobe, and these suites are in the process of being updated.

A private veranda is only really valuable if you actually want to spend time there. This one makes that very easy.

Deep cushioned reclining chairs with footrests make this some of the most comfortable balcony furniture you’ll find at sea, with a small table and plenty of room to properly settle outside. On a longer itinerary or one with plenty of sea days, this is a balcony you could really use.

What’s Included in an Aquamarine Veranda Suite?

The suite experience goes well beyond the additional space.

A bottle of Champagne welcomes you on arrival, alongside a Nespresso coffee machine and fully stocked minibar with soft drinks and beers. Complimentary wine and spirits are also available from a set menu.

NORDAQ water and fresh ice are replenished throughout the day, while in-suite dining and breakfast menus mean you can eat without leaving your suite. If you fancy an extra splurge, a separate Penthouse menu includes treats such as Champagne and caviar at an additional cost.

Unlimited standard Wi-Fi and complimentary pressing of up to five pieces per day are also included, with fresh fruit available on request.

And every afternoon, something rather special arrives at your door. The canapés deserve a section of their own later. However, perhaps the most luxurious inclusion is the service itself.

What Is Butler Service Like on Crystal Serenity?

This is where Crystal’s approach to service really begins to shine.

In Aquamarine Veranda Suite 10038, three people looked after the suite: suite attendant Nabeelah, junior suite attendant Cristina and butler Rodrigo. That might sound incredibly formal. In reality, it feels quite the opposite. The service is warm, friendly and wonderfully unobtrusive. Things simply happen without you needing to ask, while your butler quickly becomes a familiar face rather than someone who makes the experience feel overly formal.

There are thoughtful personal touches too. A birthday card was waiting in the suite on arrival, while birthdays and wedding anniversaries were acknowledged in the daily programme.

It’s a small gesture, however it sums up something Crystal does particularly well. You feel looked after without ever feeling fussed over.

What Other Cabins and Suites Are Available on Crystal Serenity?

Crystal Serenity has a surprisingly varied range of accommodation, and it’s worth looking beyond the square footage when deciding which is right for you.

Double Guest Room With Ocean View

At 215 square feet, the Double Guest Room with Ocean View is the most compact accommodation viewed, yet it certainly doesn’t feel basic.

The redesigned room feels light and contemporary, with a large bed, sofa, dressing and desk area, and a surprisingly spacious bathroom.

You won’t have a private veranda, however if a balcony isn’t important to you, this could be an appealing way to experience Crystal without paying for space you may not use.

Double Guest Room With Veranda

At up to 215 square feet, the Double Guest Room with Veranda has the same maximum interior size as the Ocean View room, with the bonus of a private veranda of up to 54 square feet.

Redesigned in 2023, it feels bright and contemporary, with a comfortable living area and sofa, built-in wardrobe and walk-in shower.

The real difference is having your own outdoor space.

If you enjoy starting the morning or ending the day on your own balcony, this could be worth the step up from the Ocean View room.

Sapphire Veranda Suite

The Sapphire Veranda Suite is a considerable step up in both space and layout.

There’s a generous living area with a large sofa and additional seating, alongside separate dressing and desk areas. The bathroom is particularly impressive, with twin basins, a large walk-in shower and separate toilet.

You can also choose between newer and more traditional styling. The Sapphire Veranda Suite (Classic) has darker woods and a distinctly more traditional feel than the redesigned suites.

So when choosing your suite, it’s worth looking beyond the size and checking the décor and configuration too.

Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite

Step up to a Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite and the accommodation starts to feel more like an apartment at sea.

A separate bedroom leads into a substantial living room, with a dining table for four, dedicated desk area and a beautifully presented mirrored bar cabinet.

Outside, the spacious veranda has room for loungers as well as additional seating, while the marble bathroom continues the luxurious feel with a large walk-in shower.

It’s the separation of the spaces that really makes the difference here. On a longer voyage, having distinct areas for sleeping, dining and relaxing could make this an especially appealing option.

Crystal Penthouse

At the very top of Serenity’s accommodation is the Crystal Penthouse, and this really does feel more like a luxury apartment than a cruise ship suite.

At 1,265 square feet, plus a 107-square-foot veranda, there’s an expansive living room, separate bedroom, dining area, kitchen and bar, and an enormous walk-in dressing room.

The bathroom is a showstopper. Marble finishes, twin basins and a huge glass shower are joined by a spa bath positioned beneath a large circular window.

Outside, the private veranda provides yet another place to relax, with deep cushioned seating overlooking the ocean.

Few people will ever need this much space at sea.

However, if you’re looking for the ultimate Crystal Serenity experience, this is quite something.

What Is the Food Like on Crystal Serenity?

Food is one of the areas where Crystal Serenity really shines.

If dining is particularly important to you, read this short separate guide to five places to eat on Crystal Serenity.

With only three nights onboard, there simply weren’t enough meals to try everything. Each evening was therefore reserved for one of the speciality restaurants, with breakfast providing the opportunity to experience the main dining room, Waterside.

Breakfast in Waterside

If you enjoy a leisurely sit-down breakfast, Waterside is a lovely way to start the day.

White tablecloths, attentive waiter service and large windows create an elegant setting without feeling overly formal. The menu offers plenty of choice, and even something as simple as an omelette and bacon arrived beautifully presented.

There’s no sense of being rushed, which seems entirely appropriate on a ship where so much of the experience is about slowing down and enjoying it.

For something more casual, Marketplace offers another breakfast option overlooking the sea. Or, if you’d rather not leave your suite at all, breakfast can be delivered for you to enjoy in-suite, perhaps out on your veranda when the weather allows.

Sometimes the most luxurious breakfast option is simply not having to go anywhere.

Umi Uma by Nobu Matsuhisa

Umi Uma is one of Crystal Serenity’s signature dining experiences and the only Nobu restaurant at sea.

Created by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, it brings his Japanese-Peruvian cuisine onboard, with both a main restaurant and sushi bar.

Japanese food wouldn’t ordinarily be my first choice, so this was perhaps one of the biggest dining surprises of the cruise.

Dinner began with lobster tempura, followed by traditional miso soup with tofu and scallions. Then came the dish Umi Uma is particularly famous for: Nobu-style black cod, marinated in Saikyo miso and served with baby peach and young ginger.

Everything was delicious and the service was phenomenal.

Even if Japanese cuisine wouldn’t usually be your first choice either, make time for Umi Uma. You may be surprised by just how much you enjoy it.

Umi Uma is included in the Crystal cruise fare, although reservations are required and the number of complimentary visits depends on the length of your sailing.

Osteria d’Ovidio

Osteria d’Ovidio was another dining surprise.

Italian food isn’t always my cuisine of choice, however this is a restaurant you really shouldn’t overlook.

Dinner begins with freshly served breads accompanied by olive oil and balsamic vinegar, before moving on to beautifully presented Italian dishes.

The Astice starter was particularly memorable: lobster in acquasale with tomato essence and basil olive oil. Colourful and beautifully presented, it looked like a piece of art, especially as the evening sunshine streamed through the window and illuminated the plate.

A small dish of Tortello di Stracotto di Manzo, pasta filled with braised beef, fig vincotto and Gorgonzola, followed and was fantastic.

For the main course, Agnello paired lamb with sweet onion, balsamic vinegar and sea asparagus, before finishing with an indulgent Mousse al Cioccolato, combining three Valrhona chocolates with almond ice cream and candied orange.

From the beautiful presentation to the quality of the food, this was another exceptional meal.

Even if Italian cuisine wouldn’t usually be at the top of your list, Osteria d’Ovidio deserves a reservation.

Beefbar

And then there’s Beefbar.

If there was one restaurant on Crystal Serenity where I could happily have eaten every meal, this was it.

Beefbar was incredible.

Created by restaurateur Riccardo Giraudi, the Monte Carlo-born restaurant brings its Beef, Reef and Leaf concept to sea, combining premium meats with seafood, plant-based dishes and street-food-inspired plates.

The setting is just as impressive. Tiled floors, lush foliage and even a tree create a relaxed, contemporary space, with playful touches including Beefbar plates decorated with little Monaco flags.

Across several lunch and dinner visits, favourites included bao buns filled with jasmine-tea-smoked Wagyu beef, Angus beef tacos with avocado, Kobe beef butter and habanero, and steak-frites with a black truffle butter sauce.

Even the fried chicken gets the Beefbar treatment. KFC, or Kobe Fried Chicken, is fried in Kobe beef tallow following a Cinzano marinade and served with Szechuan pepper sauce.

And somehow there was still room for pavlova.

The food was exceptional, however the service made just as much of an impression. Return a few times and the team quickly remembers you, even down to your drinks order. Travelling solo, that warmth made it particularly easy to feel at home.

Beefbar is included in your cruise fare. You can dine here as often as you like at lunch, while dinner reservations may be limited to ensure everyone has an opportunity to experience it.

Beyond the Restaurants

The indulgence on Crystal Serenity doesn’t stop when you leave the restaurants.

Each late afternoon, your butler delivers a beautifully presented selection of canapés to your suite, and these were unlike any canapés I’d experienced before at sea.

The selection changed daily, typically combining fresh fruit, savoury bites, crisps with a dip and something sweet. Generous, beautifully presented and always delicious, they became a lovely late-afternoon ritual.

It’s also another example of how personal the butler service can feel. Rather than simply dropping off a tray, there’s time for a quick chat and catch-up before you continue with your day.

And the treats continue in the bars.

Order a drink in Crystal Cove, at the bottom of the atrium, and you may find something rather more exciting than a bowl of nuts arriving alongside it. One evening, it was a tiny beef burger slider, just a couple of mouthfuls and absolutely delicious.

On Crystal Serenity, even the snacks between meals feel like an occasion.

Afternoon Tea in Palm Court

Even if afternoon tea isn’t usually your thing, Crystal’s afternoon tea in Palm Court is worth experiencing at least once.

Served high on Deck 12 with panoramic ocean views, it feels wonderfully elegant without being stuffy. During this sailing, a cocktail pianist played as Julius Meinl teas were served alongside a tiered stand laden with delicate finger sandwiches, scones with all the trimmings, fresh strawberries and a gorgeous selection of petit cream cakes.

Afternoon tea would never normally be high on my list of things to do on a cruise. However, Crystal is famous for it, so it simply had to be tried.

No disappointment here. Even if you only go once, make time for it.

The Seahorse Pool

The saltwater Seahorse Pool on Deck 12 is large enough for proper lap swimming, with two whirlpools and plenty of comfortable deck furniture surrounding it.

Stay onboard on a port day and you might even get it to yourself. While Serenity was in Marseille, I swam laps with not another person in the pool.

Afterwards, settle into one of the comfortable loungers with a book and you’ll experience that unobtrusive Crystal service again.

During one afternoon in the sunshine, my glass of soft drink never seemed to empty. There was no need to attract anyone’s attention or ask for another. Somehow, the crew simply noticed.

A saltwater pool, a comfortable lounger, a good book and a drink that quietly replenishes itself. Sometimes the simplest things feel the most luxurious.

The Promenade Deck

If you love a traditional wraparound promenade, Crystal Serenity’s is a real highlight of the ship.

Wide, teak-covered and completely encircling Serenity, it’s a beautiful place to walk beside the ocean. Traditional clocks add character, while the tiered area at the aft provides a wonderful spot to stop and watch the wake.

And make sure you experience it during sail-away.

As Serenity left port, Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World played across the ship. With the destination disappearing behind the wake and that unmistakable song playing, it turned sail-away into something genuinely memorable.

No huge production was needed.

Just the sea, the wake, a beautiful ship and the perfect song.

What Is There to Do During the Day?

Don’t mistake Crystal Serenity’s peaceful atmosphere for a lack of things to do.

Even on a port day in Marseille, the daily programme included fitness classes, enrichment lectures, movies, technology sessions, shuffleboard and wellness seminars.

Golf has a particularly strong presence onboard. Tucked away at the aft of Deck 6, Crystal Serenity has dedicated golf driving nets and a putting green, where you can practise your game at sea. TaylorMade clubs are available onboard, and on most cruises a qualified golf professional offers expert coaching and classes.

Crystal takes its golf offering beyond the ship too, with dedicated golf-themed voyages appearing among its special-interest sailings.

You could start the morning with a stretch class, join a golf clinic or learn more about upcoming destinations through Crystal’s enrichment programme. The Library offers books, board games and card games, while the Hollywood Theatre screens movies during the day.

Or you can ignore the programme completely.

Swim some laps, find a quiet spot with a book, walk the Promenade Deck or simply settle somewhere comfortable and watch the sea.

There’s plenty to do when you want it, and plenty of space to do absolutely nothing when you don’t.

What Are Evenings Like on Crystal Serenity?

Crystal Serenity may carry relatively few passengers, however the ship certainly doesn’t go quiet after dinner.

The Galaxy Lounge hosts the main production shows. During this sailing, Icons in Concert, featuring The Tenors Alessio Benocci, Claudio Rusconi and Simone Baldazzi, was excellent and easily worthy of an evening in the theatre.

Elsewhere, the atmosphere changes depending on where you wander. The Stardust Club hosts live music and dancing with the Crystal Showband, while Palm Court becomes an elegant evening venue with panoramic ocean views and live music.

For something more intimate, settle into the Avenue Saloon for cocktail piano music, or try your luck at Le Casino de Monte-Carlo.

The choice is impressive for a ship of Serenity’s size. You can dress for a show, find somewhere to dance, listen to live music over a drink or simply choose a quiet corner for the evening.

Serenity may feel wonderfully peaceful, but it never needs to feel quiet.

What Are Crystal’s Shore Excursions Like?

You can, of course, leave Serenity behind and explore ashore.

In Marseille, Crystal offered excursions including city highlights, Aix-en-Provence and a longer visit to Avignon, the Palace of the Popes and Les Baux-de-Provence. Staying onboard instead provided the perfect opportunity to explore Serenity while many guests were ashore, including visiting the suite open house.

In Sète, Serenity anchored offshore and guests travelled ashore by tender. The Sète Walking & Boat Tour with Local Specialties Tasting combined exploring the town on foot with a cruise through its canals, accompanied by an audio commentary.

One practical tip: be prepared to duck! Some of those bridges are surprisingly low.

The tour continued to the Étang de Thau lagoon, an area famous for oyster farming, where you can see how this local speciality is cultivated before getting the opportunity to taste it.

This happened to be my first ever oyster.

Did I like it? No.

However, trying a local speciality is all part of travelling, and my remaining oysters found very appreciative new owners among fellow guests!

What Is Crystal Serenity Like for Solo Travellers?

If you’re considering Crystal Serenity as a solo traveller, there’s no need to assume the experience is designed primarily for couples.

Dining alone feels completely comfortable, while the warmth of both crew and fellow guests makes it remarkably easy to settle into life onboard.

If you’d like to meet others, solo traveller get-togethers hosted by Crystal’s Ambassador Hosts appear in the daily programme. You can join them if you wish, although there’s certainly no need to. With restaurants, entertainment, activities and excursions filling the days, there was never an opportunity to feel lonely.

The biggest consideration is inevitably the cost. Luxury cruising solo can be a considerable splurge.

Was it worth it? Absolutely.

And perhaps the biggest compliment to the experience is wanting to return and do it all again, next time with my husband.

Is Crystal Serenity Worth It?

Crystal Serenity is undoubtedly a splurge.

However, if you value exceptional service, outstanding food, beautiful surroundings and an extraordinary amount of space, it’s difficult not to be impressed.

What makes Serenity feel luxurious isn’t one headline feature. It’s the combination of thoughtful details, wonderfully attentive service and the feeling that nothing onboard needs to be rushed.

Three nights was enough to answer the question that began several years earlier, when a Crystal ship appeared alongside in Mumbai.

It also explains why Crystal has become one of my favourite cruise lines.
