Oceania Cruises has announced what it says will be the cruise industry’s first entirely gluten-free ocean voyage, sailing from Southampton in 2028.

The 12-night sailing aboard Oceania Vista will depart Southampton on 31 May 2028, with the entire onboard culinary programme designed to be gluten-free.

For guests with coeliac disease, or those who need to follow a gluten-free diet, this means more than simply having gluten-free alternatives available. Every onboard dining venue will offer entirely gluten-free menus for the duration of the voyage.

An Entirely Gluten-Free Cruise

Oceania Cruises is particularly well known for its focus on food, and the special sailing will see its culinary programme reworked through an entirely gluten-free lens.

This will extend across the ship, including Oceania Vista’s speciality restaurants Toscana, Polo Grill, Red Ginger and Jacques, as well as more casual venues including Aquamar Kitchen and Waves Grill.

Afternoon tea, in-suite dining and freshly baked pastries from The Bakery will also be included in the gluten-free offering.

The concept is designed to remove some of the additional planning that can come with travelling on a gluten-free diet, particularly the need to continually check ingredients, preparation methods and the possibility of cross-contact.

Oceania Cruises Partners With Celiac Cruise

The voyage is being developed in collaboration with Celiac Cruise, which specialises in gluten-free travel and has experience creating trips for people with coeliac disease and the wider gluten-free community.

Celiac Cruise will provide expertise on the requirements of gluten-free travellers and will also act as an official booking partner for the sailing.

Maureen Basye, founder of Celiac Cruise, said the concept could fundamentally change the experience of travelling for guests with coeliac disease.

Instead of having to plan a holiday around where and what they can safely eat, the aim is for passengers to be able to concentrate on the destinations and the experience of travelling.

Where Will Oceania Vista Sail?

The 12-night voyage departs Southampton on 31 May 2028 and returns to Southampton after exploring destinations around England, Ireland and Scotland.

Ports of call will include:

• Cork (Cobh)
• Dublin (Dún Laoghaire)
• Glasgow (Greenock)
• Stornoway in the Hebrides
• Edinburgh (Newhaven)

The combination of a UK departure and the specialist onboard dining programme could make the sailing particularly interesting for British travellers who usually need to make additional arrangements when cruising with dietary requirements.

Why Is This Sailing Different?

Cruise lines routinely cater for a range of dietary requirements, including gluten-free diets. What makes this particular voyage unusual is the scale of the concept.

Rather than providing separate gluten-free dishes or adapting individual meals, Oceania says the complete onboard culinary experience will be gluten-free.

That includes everything from speciality dining and casual lunches to pastries and afternoon tea.

For someone who normally needs to ask questions at every meal about ingredients, preparation and potential cross-contact, that could make for a very different cruise experience.

When Is Oceania Cruises’ Gluten-Free Voyage?

Oceania Vista’s entirely gluten-free voyage will sail round-trip from Southampton for 12 nights from 31 May 2028.
